Finally Made It Back To The MAM
Mercedes and I made our way downtown and caught the last day of the Gilbert and George exhibit at the MAM this weekend. We felt some trepidation in planning to do so since this weekend was also the 105th anniversary of Harley Davidson and so the city streets were clogged with 50-something bankers and lawyers and Vietnam vets on their Hawgs, but as it turned out the busses still ran on time and most of the bikers got their freak on Saturday and were pretty mellow come Sunday, when we ventured into town.
I was eager to see the G & G, but didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. While none of their work struck me as Timeless Messages of Truth and Beauty, that's not their point, not what they're going for. I was mostly just invigorated by their pieces as a modern art exhibition has not invigorated me for some time. I found their work to be very accessible, sometimes silly, but quite deep when they wanted it to be. Overall it was a fun and bracing ride that got me thinking about my own ouvre, and things I wanted to do artistically.
We also saw an exhibit of the portraiture work of Shimon and Lindemann, two Wisconsin photographers doing pretty incredible stuff. Two of the hallmarks of their pieces that I found fascinating were their use of different media (Laser Printer, Gum Bichromate, Tintype, etc.), and the fact that they only shoot subjects with whom they have a personal bond, and sometimes photograph those people multiple times over the years, so there's a fascinating contrast of same photographers, different media, and same photographers, same people, different media, different day, month, or even decade. It's some pretty incredible stuff, and it was a day well spent browsing both exhibits.

Dark Clan Music Video
It's a one-minute promo for the new album, but I think it still counts as a music video! Thanks to the mighty David_R of Korporate Media for all his work and Glenn-whose-last-name-I-still-don't-know for helping out so much, and also to The Gothsicles for helping to make the video easy on the eyes.
Share it! Link it! Spread it!

That's right, this is the second of three free promo tracks I'm giving away to plug my new record, The Vampire Wore White, coming out February 29th on Sonic Mainline. This radio edit version of the song was mastered by Eric Oehler of Null Device in lush and wide Stereo-Awesome-Phonic Sound! It really rewards headphone listening.

One more free track, this time a non-album special, will be released on Valentine's Day, just two weeks before The Vampire Wore White hits the streets. Be there!

Free Dark Clan Download!!
So hey, to start building some momentum for the February release of my new record, The Vampire Wore White on Sonic Mainline Records, I'm making a few club/radio edits of tracks available, starting with Love In The Dark. This version of the track was mastered by Andrew Sega of Iris to be all clubalicious and ready to be pumped UP!! It features the golden voice of my oft-time collaborator and fellow music school alumnus Amanda Poulson, who is featured on a number of tracks on this album and sometimes appears live with The Dark Clan, as her schedule allows.
Download Love In The Dark (Radio Edit) - 6 MB mp3
Download it, play it, share it, enjoy!! Two more tracks to come in the future...

Sweet, Sweet Shredding
Sunday night I went out and did something I've been meaning to do for a very long time; I scoured the outer reaches of online music stores and bought a ton of music by some of my very favorite shredders. I don't mean The Ancients, those who started it all; Scotty Moore, The Trinity Of Steves (Hackett, Howe, Moore), Rudy Schenker, Uli Roth, etc. For while I respect the Ancients, their music is generally pretty gay*. Nor am I speaking of the New Breed, though I respect them as well; Herman Li, Buckethead, Children of Bodom, and their ilk. I already have lots of their stuff. No, I am speaking of the Shredders of Old, the Giants, from when the kingdom of Shreddom was at its peak and my people roamed the earth in great, poofy-haired, spandex-clad packs with the blood of Numenor^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Van Halen and Rhoads flowing strong in our veins. Know their names: Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Vinnie Moore, Michael Angelo Batio, Richie Kotzen, Tony MacAlpine, Shawn Lane (whose music is the gayest* of all!), Jennifer Batten, Michael Fath, Eric Johnson, Yngwie (Fucking) Malmsteen, and of course others. It was a grand time for shredding, though quite frankly a lot of the songs were really boring.
Anyway, for a total guitar dork like me, this shit is manna from heaven. I'm still seeking out some of the more obscure pieces, some of which I have on tape but transferring from cassette to digital is tedious and sounds like ass, so it is a last resort. Obviously, I can only listen to this stuff for so long, but there are times when I hear someone say something along the lines of "dude I saw Johnny Lang last night, he is a wicked guitar player!" and I just have to put on something with real, actual, face-melting shredtastic ridiculousness in it to relieve me. Things are better now than they were in the 90s in terms of ridiculous over-the-top shreddery, but there's still really very few people doing it like it was done back in the day. So far.
So these purchases make me quite happy.
*(That's bad gay, of course, not good gay.)

MY New Year
I mentioned that a new year, by my reckoning, had started for me a couple months ago, and here's the deal; it started when Matt Fanale said he'd put out the new Dark Clan record on his label, Sonic Mainline, which basically means that I'm "signed." It means a lot to me, far more than I could possibly express here. But yeah, it's a big deal.
Here's the Dark Clan artist page on Sonic Mainline.
And here's the new Dark Clan website.
